Meet the Author: Griffin J. Cooper

Hello! My name is Griffin J. Cooper, and I'm an aspiring fantasy novelist residing in Seattle, WA. I came to the wonderful world of fantasy literature relatively late in life, but eventually, I was sucked in by the incredible works of authors like Joe Abercrombie, Robin Hobb, John Gwynne, Michael J. Sullivan, M.L. Wang, Philip C. Quaintrell, Scott Lynch, and numerous others. Soon after, I developed a thorough appreciation for many more of the true legends of the craft, including Tolkien, Jordan, Brooks, Martin, and prolific modern masters like Brandon Sanderson, Fonda Lee, Sarah J. Maas, James Islington, and R.F. Kuang.

It's safe to say that all of these great authors have influenced my writing in one way or another, and I feel quite lucky to live in a time when such amazing sci-fi and fantasy is available in abundance.

My Writing Journey

Although I took a long break from writing in my 20s, it's something I've loved doing for most of my life. In elementary school, I'd regularly design and write my own Mad Magazine parody called "Nutty Magazine" (clearly, my cleverness manifested early on). In high school, I took creative writing classes and started a blog about my beloved and miserable baseball team, the Seattle Mariners. Around that time, though, my interests temporarily shifted to more consequential areas, like smoking weed and playing computer games.

Fortunately, in my late 20s, as I discovered my love for the fantasy genre, I was reminded of my long-time passion for writing. "Aha!" I thought, "There must be a way to combine these two pleasures!" This momentous revelation led me to sit down, open up a Google Doc, and start writing.
